A self-serve bay gives you a high-pressure wand, several settings and a timer. Used in the right order, it gets a car very clean for little money.

The Right Order

  1. Pre-soak / tire cleaner: spray the whole car from the bottom up, wheels first, and let it sit about a minute (not in hot sun).
  2. High-pressure soap: work top to bottom, holding the wand about 2–3 feet from the paint.
  3. Foam brush, carefully: rinse the brush with the wand first. Better: skip it on paint and use your own clean mitt.
  4. High-pressure rinse: top to bottom, including door jambs and wheel wells.
  5. Wax or clear coat protectant (optional), then spot-free rinse last.
