A ceramic coating is a liquid (usually silica- or SiO2-based) that cures into a thin, hard, glossy layer on top of the clear coat. Water beads and rolls off, dirt sticks less, and the car is easier to wash.
What It Does and Does Not Do
- Does: add gloss, repel water, resist UV fading and light chemical etching, make washing faster.
- Does not: stop rock chips, door dings or deep scratches. For chips, look at paint protection film (PPF). It also does not mean you never need to wash.

Coating vs Wax vs Sealant
| Protection | Typical life | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carnauba wax | Weeks to a couple of months | Warm glow, cheap, easy |
| Synthetic sealant | About 3–6 months | Slicker, longer than wax |
| Consumer ceramic spray | Several months | Easy top-up |
| Professional ceramic coating | About 2–5+ years (per product) | Needs paint prep; warranty terms vary |
What It Costs
Our 2026 U.S. estimate for a professionally installed coating on a sedan, including wash, decontamination and a one-step polish, is about $580–$855. Multi-year coatings with multi-step paint correction cost more. Most of the price is labor. Estimate your state.
Caring for a Coated Car
- Wait the cure time the installer gives you (often about a week) before washing.
- Use pH-neutral soap; touchless or careful hand washes are best.
- Many installers ask for yearly inspections to keep the warranty; get the terms in writing.
